the task here is to make a mold of this Clay piece that has very moderate thickness. the brush on technique is what suites best because the casting that has to be performed is an "hollow cast" meaning it's empty in the middle.
the clay peice on the right is first closed using non-hardening clay.
then a thick platinum cured silicone is applied, 3 times. it creates what is called a "glove mold" which means that it can be removed by pulling it up just like a glove.
When the silicone is fully cured a clay "shim" is built around the piece.
it will define the limit of each part of the "mother mold" or "shell"(4 parts total). The red arrows show the "registration key" that is essential to have a perfect alignment of all parts of the shell.
the material is poured in the mold that will manualy be rotated in every direction until cure is complete. A few batches are necessary in order to have a smooth and even surface inside/out.
